A real first lesson, not a sightseeing ride
A discovery flight is an introductory flight lesson: a short ground briefing, about an hour of airplane time, and a debrief afterward. You sit in the left seat — the pilot's seat — and once we're clear of the traffic pattern, the controls are yours.
It's also not a test. You don't need to perform, prepare, or know anything in advance. Most first-timers fly better than they expect, because the airplane is more stable than they expect.

How the flight actually goes
Plan on about two hours total at Bowman Field. We start with a short intake and a briefing, walk around the airplane together, and then go fly. I handle the takeoff; once we're clear of the pattern, you fly — straight-and-level first, then climbs, descents, and turns over Louisville. Churchill Downs, the Ohio River, and downtown are typically visible from our normal practice area.
I take the controls back for the landing, and most first-timers tell me watching a real landing up close was their favorite part. Back in the office, we debrief and log the flight — those hours count toward any certificate you pursue later.
Show up as you are
You don't need a headset (I provide one), a logbook (I'll start one for you if you want), or any prior knowledge. The whole packing list:
- Sunglasses — non-polarized is slightly better for glass-panel displays
- Comfortable shoes — you'll use the rudder pedals; no flip-flops
- Layers — cockpit temperature varies with the season
- A light breakfast — steady blood sugar, calm stomach
- An empty bladder — there's no bathroom in the airplane
Bad weather? We reschedule. Simple.
I don't squeeze discovery flights into marginal weather. The point of the flight is a clean, honest first experience — not surviving turbulence. If the forecast doesn't cooperate, we pick a new time, and calm morning or evening air usually gives the smoothest first impression.
If you're prone to motion sickness, mention it when booking and we'll aim for the smoothest part of the day. It's almost never a problem on calm-morning flights.
