Recreational Pilot Endorsements in AC 61-65K
Recreational pilot endorsements are narrower than private pilot endorsements, but they still cover several different jobs: knowledge-test preparation, practical-test readiness, 50 NM operating limits, towered or Class B/C/D operations, and supervised solo while adding another rating.
Simply Endorsed CFI groups the recreational pilot entries together so the instructor can avoid mixing them with private pilot, sport pilot, or student solo endorsements. The right endorsement depends on the pilot's certificate level, limitations, destination, and privilege being exercised.
Relevant endorsements
Recreational pilot knowledge test
Shows the required ground training or review is complete and the applicant is ready for the knowledge test.
Recreational pilot practical test
Documents practical-test proficiency for the recreational pilot certificate path.
Within or beyond 50 NM
Used for recreational pilot operations tied to the 50 NM limitation and beyond-50-NM authorization path.
Recent PIC limits and additional-rating solo
Used for limited recent PIC experience and supervised solo while working toward another certificate or rating.
Towered or Class B/C/D operations
Documents the training or authorization for recreational pilot operations in towered or Class B, C, or D airspace.
When to use and when not to use these endorsements
Use these endorsements when the pilot is operating inside the recreational pilot rule path. For a private pilot checkride, student solo, or sport pilot privilege, use the page and app category that matches that specific certificate or privilege instead.
The recreational path is a good example of why Simply Endorsed uses workflow groups. The same phrase, such as "towered airport" or "50 NM," can mean different things depending on the pilot certificate and the privilege being exercised.
Common mistakes
- Using private pilot endorsement logic for a recreational pilot limitation.
- Missing the difference between within-50-NM and beyond-50-NM authorization.
- Confusing student solo airspace endorsements with recreational pilot operating privileges.
- Skipping the pilot's existing certificate limitations before choosing endorsement text.
Reference aid only. Verify the pilot's certificate privileges, operating limits, training record, current regulations, and current FAA guidance before signing.
