Logbook Audit Checklists for Checkride Endorsements

A logbook audit is not just a total-time check. Before a checkride, the instructor and applicant should confirm the required experience, required training, knowledge-test report, recent practical-test preparation, and the correct endorsements all line up with the certificate or rating sought.

This checklist is built around the endorsement side of that review. Use Simply Endorsed CFI to find the model endorsement language, then compare the actual logbook, application, and training record against the current FARs and FAA guidance.

Endorsement-focused audit checklist

1

Confirm the target certificate, rating, category, and class

Endorsement requirements change by path. Confirm the exact practical test and aircraft category/class before choosing endorsement text.

2

Review aeronautical experience and required training

Check logged experience against the applicable FAR. Make sure required training is logged, signed, and identifiable before issuing a practical-test endorsement.

3

Match the knowledge-test endorsement and deficiency review

For paths that require a knowledge-test endorsement and missed-question review, confirm both the original preparation and the post-test deficiency review are documented.

4

Check the recent practical-test preparation window

A.1 and other path-specific practical-test endorsements often depend on recent preparation. Confirm the timing before the applicant goes to the practical test.

5

Verify documents and application data

Compare logbook totals, IACRA or paper application entries, medical or BasicMed status when applicable, certificates, government ID, and any required test reports.

Reference aid only. This is a review framework, not an official FAA audit form. The required items vary by certificate, rating, category, class, prior privileges, and applicant history.
